Nancy Lou Canyon, MFA

Ms. Canyon has been photographing nature since she was a child. Her first camera, a Kodak Brownie Box, recorded her family, vacations, and nature. After leaving home, she received a Minolta SLR as a birthday gift. In the early 70s, she began working to compose plant images, thinking she might write a book on herbs.

After studying art and photography in the 80s at NW College of Art, she began using her photos to compose paintings. Once graduated, she joined a modern dance group. She photographed dancers and began painting her subjects wrapped in leaves. In the 90s, the switch to digital wasn’t smooth for Ms. Canyon, as the lag-time between candid moment and shutter opening and closing, frustrated her. A number of years passed without much photographic inspiration. Recently she’s gotten back into photography with the purchase of a Nikon 3000D Digital Camera. Now she’s photographing plants, landscapes, her grandson, and birds.

Ms. Canyon loves to encourage others to make art and provides a workspace for people who want to explore spontaneous artistic expression in the Morgan Block Building in Fairhaven. As a writing and art teacher, she encourages students to get down the candid word, image, or shot. “Working immediately evokes power and intimacy,” says Ms. Canyon. “What could be more satisfying?”
